Incredible edibles

Each year, the children in Year 1, plant, care for and then eat a range of vegetables and food items. We also take part in the Ware in Bloom - Incredible edible competition.

I am pleased to say that the judges visited us in July and make their judgement on our "allotment" and they returned this week to present us with a Silver Gilt Award and a goody bag. Well done children!

Traction man

Traction man is diving into the foamy waters of the sink....

He spent time with his friend scrubbing brush and his enemy the poisonous dishcloth

And he explored the school.

Fiesta Nacional de España in Hargreaves class

Today we watched and sang along with The Lingo show, listened to Flamenco music, created a fact booklet about Spain, ate Spanish omelette, made castanets, learned about Antoni Gaudí and created a mosaic picture, wore red and yellow clothes, sang Incy wincy spider in Spanish and listened to two different stories read by three of our visitors.

Fiesta Nacional de Espana

Today we have celebrated our third annual cultural day.  This time we focused on Spain.  Children came dressed in red and yellow (and some in flamenco dresses) and did a variety of activities focusing on learning all about Spain and its people.  We also tasted some traditional Spanish omelettes which were delicious.

Examples of activities carried out include:

Flamenco music and dancing.
Art work inspired by Pablo Picasso or Gaudi.
Tesselation work inspired by the Alahmbra.
Finding out where in the world Spain is and important people and buildings there.
Spanish stories.
Learning basic Spanish language.
And lots more...

Here are some photos from year 5/6.

Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who gave their time to supporting us today.  We really appreciate all your help.

Next Thursday, children will be sharing their favourite activity from today during our Celebration assembly.

Horowitz cityscapes

As part of our art topic of cityscapes we have created silhouettes of London using famous landmarks. Then we painted two different backgrounds for our silhouettes. We tried out acrylic paints to create an abstract, thick textured background and then the following week we used watercolour paints to create soft blended sunsets. We are really pleased with our final cityscapes and they look fantastic displayed in Horowitz Class.

These are our acrylic cityscapes:

Investigation in Year 1

As part of our shared Wednesday afternoons the Year 1 children have undertaken many tasks. Over the past two weeks each child has had a chance to work scientifically and develop their understanding of change. They have done this by making toast!

The advantage to this type of science is that, when you have finished observing, questioning, describing and recording the changes you notice, you can (if you so wish to) eat the experiment.

Music

Today Hargreaves class had their first lesson using the Glockenspiels. They enjoyed it and will continue to learn how to hold the beater and play the notes rhythmically to accompany their song on Charanga.

Harvest

BloggerImage

On Monday, we gathered in the church to give thanks and celebrate Harvest Festival. Many thanks for the generous food donations, these will be added to those from the church congregations and put to good use.

Each year group took part in the service:-

Reception - sang Dingle Dingle Dangle Scarecrow
Keystage 1 - showed their Andy Warhol inspired fruit and vegetable artwork
Years 3 and 4 - treated us the the Harvest Samba Song
Years 5 and 6 - read the prayers and readings

The school choir sang a beautiful song of thanks and John Hookway, our vicar, attempted to beat the children at hangman, but once again they defeated him. Maybe next time John!

We are glad so many of you were able to join us, in the church building, to take part in this service. We hope you enjoyed it.

Mark Prisk MP

Four of our house captains spent part of Friday taking a visitor around school. Our local MP, Mark Prisk, came to visit and find out more about us.   The children enjoyed showing off their school and impressed him with their enthusiasm. It was great to witness their obvious confidence and of course their great manners. They really were a fine example of our school values. Well done.
