Animal research

The children in KS1 have been researching and writing factual reports about animals. They were able to choose a creature that interested them and then find out all about it. 

Today in Hargreaves the children worked in pairs, to use the iPad, and then wrote an individual report.

Alice found that Lemurs live on the African island of Madagascar.

Oscar found out Hyenas are famous for laughing.

Kobe found out Rattlesnakes shed their skin.

Dexter found out Pandas prefer to eat bamboo but can eat meat.

Alfie found out Sharks live near the ocean floor.

They worked really hard and found out some amazing facts. Their individual reports are well worth reading. Well done to them all.

Chloe said she loved using the iPad for research.

Dylan wanted to stay and find out more.

Maths investigations in Horowitz Class

Today in Horowitz Class, we were given some interesting facts to investigate. 

Thes children found the answer to this question:

A deer's antlers can be as wide as three fifths of its whole body length. If you had antlers of the same scale, how big would they be?

These children found the answer to this question:

In order to swallow its food a snake can open its jaws five times its normal size. How wide would you be able to open your mouth, if you could do the same? 

After finding the answers to these questions, we found ways to present these to the class visually.

Dear Rocket Science Participant,

 

Thank you so much for being a part of our national experiment Rocket Science. Over 5,400 participants entered their data which has now been sent off for analysis. We will present the results of the experiment in the Autumn in our Rocket Science final report which will be available to all schools and groups who took part.

 

Red or Blue?

In the meantime we know you are all bursting to know whether the red or blue packet contained the space seeds and we can now finally reveal the true identity of the seeds! Before Tim went to space, he flipped a coin to decide which pack would contain the space seeds and recorded it on video.

Rocket Seeds

As Tim Peake hurtles back to earth, we thought you would like a reminder of our science experiment. Hargreaves and Horowitz planted, cared for, measured, counted the seedlings and submitted their Rocket seed data. Hopefully we will soon find out which seeds had, in fact, been into space.

A comment from year 6- It was fun caring for the seeds. We had to go down to Hargreaves class every Friday, for six weeks, and measure how tall they are and how many leaves they have. They are now growing in the Ks1 garden. I can't wait to see which ones have been up to space. The year ones were really excited about looking after seeds that have been up to space, but are sad that they can't eat them due to space radiation.

Pao de lo

Last week Hargreaves class joined the rest of the school in celebrating Portugal day. We had great fun undertaking a variety of activities, but the favourite was cooking. We baked a Portuguese sponge cake or Pao de lo. The children ate a slice before going home and declared it "the best cake ever"!

Dia de Portugal

Last Friday, as part of our Modern Foreign Language policy we held our second annual cultural day at Christ Church.  The children came in dressed in red, green and yellow and took part in a wide range of activities throughout the day, covering pretty much every subject in the curriculum between them.

We started with a traditional continental breakfast which went down well.  We learned some basic Portuguese words and took part in many fun activities including:

Building our own Vasco de Gama bridge out of newspaper which had to hold 1kg in weight.

Learning about the age of exploration.

Finding out about a child's life in Portugal.

Art inspired by a Portuguese impressionist artist.

Listening to Portuguese music and stories.

Creating a Portuguese flag - drawing and using ICT.

Researching about Portugal.

Finding out where Portugal is in the world.

Making our own Portuguese cake - well done Hargreaves class.

Learning to be great footballers like Ronaldo!

Everyone had a very enjoyable day.  Here is the evidence.

Charanga Assembly

As part of our music curriculum, we give each child a chance to regularly perform in group. This is done in front of an audience during one of our tremly music assemblies.This week we held our third Charanga assembly, of this year. 

Each class performed an item from their weekly music lessons:-

Carle and Mckee – sang Old McDonald 

Hargreaves  - sang Round and Round and played Glockenspiels 

Butterworth – sang Zootime 

Potter – instrumental with percussion rendition of Zootime

Lewis, McGough and Fine – sang Lean on me 

Shakespeare, Tolkien and Horowitz – Sang Make you feel my Love accompanied by glockenspiel, a recorder and soloists

Please remember each child has their own Charanga log in. They can use this if you want to see what your child has been learning or they want to continue their learning at home or access some of the other music world activities.

Bug Club

Bug Club has has another update and is now even easier to use!

Those of you in Year 1 and Year 2 should still have a log in to Bug Club and, as you know, you no longer access it through the Bug club website, you need to log in via ActiveLearn.  If you can't remember your log in, please ask your class teacher, she will be able to look it up for you.

Bug club will now also work on most mobile devices, however it is recommend that, if you are able to, you use Chrome or Firefox as your browser to access the site.

If you are in Hargreaves, Butterworth or Potter take a look and see if you can find one of the animal themed books your teacher has added for you.
