Number Day 2014

On Friday 24th January the whole school celebrated Number Day, in aid of the NSPCC.

The children dressed up in anything with a mathematical theme and were treated to lots of activities related to numbers and maths.  The children had a fantastic day and gave lots of positive feedback about how much they had enjoyed it.  Hopefully, it'll become an annual feature in Christ Church's calendar.

Horowitz class spent a riotous morning inventing machines that threw paper.  As well as using their 'trial and improvement' skills, they had plenty of practice in measuring and working out the average distance their paper ball travelled.

Emily, Annabelle, Lottie and Freya's machine threw a ball of paper the furthest: over 10 metres.

I was particularly impressed by the way that all the children co-operated with each other as there were no disagreements!  The only down-side was spending half an hour of lunchtime hoovering up the little bits of polystyrene that covered the entire classroom floor!!!

A big "thank you" to all the children and parents/carers for supporting Number Day and making it so successful and to the Christ Church staff for all their hard work in turning maths into a subject that children enjoy learning about.

Number day in Carle Class

On number day we came to school dressed in patterns and numbers.

We made number biscuits.
First we had to weigh and measure the ingredients.  Then we used number cutters to cut out the numbers.  We added the correct number of smarties to match the number.

Maths investigations in Horowitz class

Horowitz class regularly take part in maths investigations.  Last week's investigation was about Eric the sheep:

Eric the sheep is lining up to be shorn.  He is last in the queue.  Each time the shearer takes one sheep from the front of the line, Eric sneaks past two sheep to get closer to the front.  If there are 50 sheep in front of Eric to start with, how many will be shorn before Eric gets to the front?

The aim of the lesson was not just to work out the answer but to use different strategies (that we'd talked about in class) to get to that answer.  Here are some photos of what a few of the children did:

Freya and Saffy used counters and drew a diagram.

Jessica and Freya also drew a diagram, but they used multilink, as did Freddie and Libby plus Ally and Sam.

Talitha, Lottie and Amelia kept their multilink the same colours so they weren't confused.  Eric the sheep was the pink cube at the end.

Archie and Fred looked for a pattern in the numbers.

Amelia and Hermione discovered that they could use ratio in their pattern.

Rebecca and Dougie chose to work alone to start with and compare answers at the end.

Then anything interesting that was found out was jotted down on a recording sheet, like Holly and Sam are doing here.  Afterwards, we discussed our strategies and how successful they were in this investigation.

"It was fun but very confusing!" said Emily and Annabelle, when they got different answers with different strategies!

Year 3&4 chocolate topic

Year 3 and 4 are looking forward to our new topic of 'chocolate'!

Here are some of the things we already know and some questions we would like to answer during the course of our topic. The year 3 & 4 teaching team will incorporate these ideas into our planning.
