Easter nests

McKee class would like to tell you haw to make Easter nests.

Ask an adult to melt some chocolate
and pour it over some cornflakes.

I am mixing the things together.
I love making cakes.

You need to put it in the cake case.
Scrap it with a knife.

Put the eggs on. Put the chick on and lots of dots.

All done and yummy.

Easter Bonnet Parade

"I think I'll wear for Easter a bonnet made of lace, But most of all I think I'll wear a smile upon my face......." is part of a song that McKee class have sung this Easter.

Today Inkpen, Carle and Mckee invited their family and friends to attend the Foundation stage Easter bonnet parade. The children made their bonnets at home and brought them into school. They paraded around the Nursery outdoor area and entertained their audience by singing three songs, I love the sun, Hot cross Buns and Easter Eggs. We hope those of you who were there enjoyed it.

The children enjoyed their parade and are keen to show off their hats again, tomorrow, in the church service when they will sing one of the songs to the congregation. See you there.

The Great Bed of Ware

McKee and Carle classes had the opportunity to take part in an historic event today. They witnessed the Great Bed of Ware arriving back in to its home town. The two classes walked to the Museum, who kindly provided blankets for the children to sit on and then they spent the morning watching the parts of the bed being unloaded and lifted into the Museum.

We were interested in the bed, we will learn more about that next term and the crane because we have been looking a vehicles.

We had the opportunity to speak to The BBC, Ware online and volunteers from the Museum. The children behaved impeccably and were very polite to the people who spoke to them. We were very proud of them. 

The highlight of the trip was seeing the crane lift the largest section on the bed up and over the trees and bushes and through the roof of the museum, which had been removed for this purpose.

R - We saw a crane. It was red.They lifted the bed. I liked looking at the crane. I want to see the bed.

N - I liked seeing the bed up high.

E - I liked the crane.

H - It was good watching the crane lift the bed.

A - It was good. I liked seeing the crane.

G - It was good watching the Great Bed of Ware being lifted. We were sitting down. I liked watching it go over the hedge.

J - I liked watching the crane. It was good. It had big wheels.

E - We saw a big crane. It was red. I liked looking at the bed, I liked it so much.

M - I liked watching the crane move the bed. It lifted the bed up high. It was a huge bed.

Z- I liked it. It is red. I want to go and see the bed.

D - I liked it when the bed went up high over the bushes. It had huge wheels.

The children are keen to see the bed in situ and so we plan a return visit to the museum to see it once it has been reassembled. Thank you to the parents who walked with us.

Toddler Easter Service

Inkpen, Carle and McKee were invited to join with the toddlers at church to celebrate Easter. We sang lots of songs and collected various items to teach us about the Easter story. The children enjoyed sharing this time with the members of Christ Church Toddlers and many were able to see their younger siblings.

L - We got a heart because God loves us.
R - A chick was for new life.
O - A cross because Jesus was dead..
E - We had a happy and sad face to show in the story bits.
J - We had streamers because we were happy.

Your should have brought home a bag, such as this, and the card inside explains what the items represent. I am sure they would like to share it with you.

Wodson Football Tournament

On Monday 19th March, Christ Church played in the Wodson Football Tournament. The team sheet stood as: Jordan M, Tom J, Tom A, Sam S, Dylan C, Jake H, Moris K, Joe M, Conner P and Cameron D.

Our first game was against Wheatcroft, unfortunately due to a poor first performance we lost 3-1, fortunately we got a consolation goal, Dylan crossed it in for Moris to finish.

Our next match was against Priors Wood, and despite a better performance we still lost 1-0. After a 4 match rest, we played Hertford Heath, and won 6-0 by a Moris hat trick, Joe’s 2 and Dylan with 1. Then another 4 match rest, before we played St. Andrew's coached by our former Christ Church LSA, the one and only Mr Cooper. Unfortunately we lost 4-0.

We then went on to play another tricky team, St John's, again losing 5-0. After that we were feeling great when we beat the team that won the last tournament, St Catherine’s, 3-1.

We all enjoyed it and were also just 1 point off the semi’s and so came third in our group. Special thanks to Sean and Dean (our Chauncy coaches), Mark Sheppey, Pat Healy and Mrs Anstead for taking us.

Lewis class are very fortunate to be taking part in dance lessons with Mrs Hornblower, the dance teacher from Chauncy school. She has been in 4 times now – in these sessions she has watched us in a dance lesson, developed our free-style techniques and has started to teach us a routine.

We are beginning to work towards a performance! This will take place on May 18th at Chauncy school. Providing we have parental permission, we will go to the school and dance on the stage in front of an audience. Letters will be sent home after the Easter holiday.

Lewis class will be dancing to ‘It's The Hard-Knock Life’ from the musical classic ‘Annie.’ As part of their routine, they will need two props; a small bucket and a rag for cleaning the orphanage. The children will also need an ‘orphan’ costume. See below for some inspiration.

Bug Club

Lewis class is one of the classes trialling the Bug Club! Please check your child's book bag for the school log in code, their username and password.

Miss Stone demonstrated the site to the children on Monday and will also be able to log into the teacher page to see which books each child has read, whether they answered the quiz questions and whether each child enjoyed their book using the smiley faces.

She will also be able to allocate new books to your child, when they have run out of books to read or if she feels they need a different book.

Although there will be several books for your child to choose from please do not feel that they all have to be done in one night, they don't. It is far better to take your time and choose one to share together and use this to supplement the reading book that is in your child's book bag.

Once the trial period has ended the school will decide whether to subscribe to Bug Club. We will be asking you and the children for feedback. In the meantime, enjoy the books and please don't hesitate to ask Miss Stone if you have any questions or need help accessing the site.

Braille assembly

Braille Assembly

On the 7^th March KS2 at Christ church School had two visitors in our assembly.

They told us about Braille. Braille came from a man who was very clever his name was Louis Braille. His mum and dad taught him how to read the alphabet using dots.

In assembly we played a game with 12 children. 6 children were blind folded and the other 6 made big loud animal sounds and the people who were blind folded had to find the animal sound that matched their animal picture. It was funny and fun.

We learnt that when you are blind you can do sports like running and long jump and you can cycle round and round when you are blind.

We also saw a picture of a school in India. The children ate ice cream and did some work like everyone else.

Back in class we got a book mark and a Braille card with questions to answer on it.

Finally, everyone led out of the hall with their eyes closed like they were blind. They all had their hand on the person in fronts shoulder and their eyes were closed but the front persons eyes were open.

Spanish Club!

Spanish Club!

Mrs O’Reilly does a Spanish club every Monday after school. These are the 13 people that do it and their Spanish names: Evie (Eva ) Dougie(Diego) Dylan (Dilan) Hannah (Ana) Helena ( Elena) Rebecca ( Rebeca) Alex (Alejandro) Bella (Bella) Caitlin (Catalina) Cathrine ( Caterina) Rachel (Raquel) Phoebe (Filomena) Isabel (Isabel). We have learnt to say all these things in spanish: hello, Goodbye, My name is, My age is, I live in, numbers 1-10, colours and animals. We do running games and one week we even got some smarties!

We love it!

Dance

McKee class are very fortunate to be taking part in dance lessons with Mrs Hornblower, the dance teacher from Chauncy school. She has been in 3 times now - the first time she just watched us in a dance lesson, in the second she took the lesson, found out what we could do and how well we followed instructions. Today she began to teach us a new dance.

 

We are beginning to work towards a performance! Mothering Sunday

In McKee class we know that a mother can come in all shapes, colours and sizes.

All shapes, sizes and colours!

When asked,  the members Mckee class could come up with lots of  reasons why their own mum is amazing. These varied from "she cooks good curry" to "she gives good cuddles".

Some read their child stories, others buy crispie bars, some bake fantastic cakes. Others are amazing just because they are "my mummy".

Happy Mothering Sunday to all Christ Church Mothers, but especially those in McKee. 

Dance Festival

Eleven girls from years 5 and 6 took part in the East Herts Dance festival at County Hall on Tuesday 7th February. We had rehearsals during the day and a photo shoot which was great fun.

On the evening we performed to a packed out Castle Hall, the theme for the festival was the Olympics. We danced to Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk as this is the Olympic motto. We wore words on the front and backs of our t-shirts and we showed them to the audience when they came up in the song.

At the end of the dance we threw our jumpers off of the stage but were unable to find them at the end due to the blackout for the next dance, we all found this very funny. All of us and our parents had a great time.

Rotary Winner

Mr Robert Boutlon, of the Rotary Club was, this week, a visitor at our celebration assembly. He said how much he always enjoyed coming to our school and praised the children for the beautiful way they entered assembly and waited for the rest of the school. He also mentioned it was not his first visit to Chrish Church to present a prize and that he alwasy enjoyed visiting us.

Natalie, of Tolkien Class,  was our winner in the Rotary Young Writers Competition. The theme of the essay competition was the Olympics. Natalie was presented with a £15 token by Robert Boulton. She will also be presented with a certificate at the Ware Library next week by Stuart Storey (a local celebrity an exOlympic athlete).

Well done to all who took part and especially Natalie. 

Holi

In McKee class we are beginning to look at Spring festivals.

We have looked at Mothering Sunday, why we celebrate it and why it is different to the American Mother's day. We have begun to think about Lent and Easter and we enjoyed finding out about the Hindu festival of Holi.

Throwing colours

During the festival Hindu children get the chance to throw coloured powder paint at each other. We decided that even though this would be fun, we did not think it would be appreciated by those of you at home who have to do the washing! We opted for throwing "tissue paper squares" instead.

N - Holi is when Hindu people say goodbye winter, hello spring!

R - At Holi children flick their favourite colour paint around. I think it looks like fun.

G - I have never thrown paint. I would like to do that.

E - I have a bonfire at firework night. Hindu children have one at Holi. I think that is fun.

E - They throw paint at people, they throw it because they are happy. I would not want to do that.

Z - I think it is colourful. I see lots of colours at bonfire night and Christmas.

Netball skills

Lewis class have had a teacher called Miss Easter from Chauncy Secondary School teaching us ball skills for the last few weeks.

For the last 3 weeks we developed our catching and throwing skills as well as improving our dribbling skills. This week, we have the opportunity to use all the skills we have learnt, in a variety of games.

We had our first chance to learn about how to play netball. Miss Easter told us there were three really important rules we had to remember. They were: defenders must be at least 1 metre away from the person with the ball; you can only hold the ball for 5 seconds and finally you must stand still if you have the ball.

We really enjoy it a lot. We are really looking forward to our sessions in the future.

French exchange

Today Tolkien Class had a very fun and challenging task!  We met up with 19 French exchange students, who are currently visiting Presdales School.  They were aged 14 and they were all very kind.

The session started with Tolkien Class singing the exchange students the weather song we have learnt in our weekly French lesson.  They enjoyed listening to our singing.  Then we took it in turns to ask them questions.  We asked them questions in English so that they could practise their English and then they asked us questions in French.  We did really well to answer their questions in French.  It was good practise, although quite difficult.  Then we went around the hall asking each other in French 'As-tu des freres et des soeurs?'  (How many brothers and sisters do you have?)  We kept a tally chart of the results.  Finally we played a game like musical chairs.  We were given a day of the week in French and when our day was called out we had to swap places. 

Mrs Anstead was very impressed with the children's confidence to have a go and speak French.  Well done Tolkien Class!

One potato, two potato, three potato.....

Today McKee class planted their potatoes as per the competition instructions.

They filled the two grow bags with soil...

...placed the sprouting tubers in the soil...

...covered them and watered them.

Now they need to take care of them, water them, tend them and hopefully watch them grow.

This week in Carle Class we have been learning about trains after making our outside train last week. We have read the story of The Train Ride by June Crebbin. The words in the story sound like a train chugging along on a track. As it is our class assembly next week we have drawn pictures from the story and created a big red train!

 In the classroom, the role play area has transformed into a train ticket office and we have been making tickets. Where would you like to take a train too?

On Thursday an old fashioned London double decker bus came to visit us on the playground. We got to look around the bus and sit on the top deck!

 

A - 'we looked around the bus and we went up the stairs'

O - ' we chatted on the bus'

A -  ' we went  upstairs and downstairs, the bus was very old'

A - 'the seats were like a bunk bed'

C - 'there was a ticket machine and I got a ticket'

M - 'my favourite bit was sitting at the top'

T  - 'to ring the bell we had to pull a bit of string at the top and it made a ringing noise like a bell'

R- 'we sat at the bottom of the bus'

R - 'we waved out of the windows of the bus'

We all reading enjoyed looking at the bus and being able to sit on it thank you for bringing it in.

Netball Tournament

Last Saturday most of the netball club and Miss Ball went to Wodson park to the district netball tournament. Annabelle scored some goals which helped the B team win two of their games. The A team won a few of of their games as well.

Overall the B team came 7th out of 8 and the A team came 6th out 6. Well done done to everyone who participated in the tournament.

The wheels on the bus

Last week in Mckee class we were fortunate enough to have some of the children's parents join us after our assembly. Whilst in the classroom many noticed our role play area and one dad in particular commented on it. He also happened to own a big red bus! (An RT1206 to be precise.)

The day was set and today Carle, McKee and Inkpen were able to hop on board and experience sitting in a bus that was built in 1949.

We had made our own tickets and H was ready as our ticket collector, but the bus owner also had a ticket machine and some of us were able to purchase real tickets.

The children loved going on the bus and were amazed at how big the wheels were,  they were surprised that Mrs Matthews knew how to ring the bell and what the mirrors on the stairs were for. It was also surprising that the floor was made of wood.

They loved looking under the bus, around the bus, climbing the steep and windy stairs and wondered where the door at the back was. They laughed when Mrs Matthews told them she used to go to school on a very similar bus and that some of her children's books at home, still offer up the tickets which were placed as bookmarks on journeys long ago.

Thank you so much to the RT1206 preservation group, we loved your bus and wish we could have stayed longer, especially Mrs Matthews who was reminded of being little again!
